Explaining The EDM Cutting Process

Remington offers in-house tooling services to deliver quality FDA-approved devices that exceed your expectations. Experienced machining specialists work in our shop, performing a variety of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) cutting services that result in high-precision medical devices.

EDM cutting is a machining technique used to manufacture complex components for medical devices. Compared to other machining processes, Remington’s EDM offers unmatched advantages for custom medical devices, such as:

  • Surface cleanliness
  • Tight tolerances
  • Sharp inside corners
  • Small holes or openings
  • Burr-free surfaces

We specialize in several EDM manufacturing processes, including sinker EDM and wire EDM services.

Choose Remington—We’re the Total Package

We offer everything you need to manufacture and launch your medical device, including safely and securely packaging your device once it’s ready to launch.

The Difference Between Sinker and Wire EDM Services

An electric current is the primary source of power for both sinker and wire EDM services. During the process, the electrode never touches the conductive material undergoing machining.

While both processes use electric currents, the main difference is that wire EDM services are performed by cutting completely through the material being machined, and a sinker EDM machine does not.

Our EDM Wire Cut Product Approach

The wire EDM process involves a thin, single strand of wire that’s fed through the workpiece. During the process, electric current flows, cutting away the conductive material and leaving behind a smooth surface that doesn’t require polishing or additional finishing procedures. There are minimal changes needed for the mechanical properties of a product’s material when the EDM wire cut approach is used. That’s why our wire EDM services are typically performed when low residual stresses are desired.

We approach EDM wire cut products with versatility in mind. Remington offers standard and high precision tolerances for a variety of medical device moldings. Capable of running multiple wire sizes, our wire EDM machines can use a microwire as small as 20µm (0.0008″) in diameter. Our experience combined with our revolutionary equipment allows Remington to provide you with accurate, repeatable parts and components for your medical device that are manufactured from your choice of conductive material.

Contract Manufacturing Solutions at Remington’s EDM Machine Shop

At Remington, we understand all the factors that go into manufacturing quality medical devices. No matter the type of product you need, your company deserves to thrive by launching a quality medical device that reaches the market successfully. Our EDM machine shop gives us a unique opportunity to familiarize ourselves with and gain in-depth knowledge on your product, which results in minimal lead time and reduced costs.

By trusting our medical device manufacturing experts to create your custom device components in-house at our EDM machine shop, you can rest assured that your product is held to the highest-quality standard. We take the time to analyze every piece to ensure accurate form, fit, and function before and after it’s cut. With Remington, your product meets or exceeds medical industry standards and expectations, as well as your own.

Our EDM Die Sinker Product Approach

By refraining from cutting completely through conductive materials using sinker machining, Remington can manufacture a wider variety of medical device applications, such as blind cavities and keyways, thin walls, cross-sections, and complex shapes. A major advantage of our sinker EDM cutting solutions is that customized components are created without inducing stress into the electrically conductive material, providing low-risk machining solutions for complex device components. We recommend using sinker EDM when your goal is to minimize machining risks and maintain exceptional accuracy and reliability.

Our approach to EDM die sinker products is to continually improve. We keep up with the best sinker EDM technology that offers quality surface finishes. As a result, the Remington team is well-versed in best practices for producing stamping die and injection mold components using our state-of-the-art sinker EDM machines

As innovative, full-service contract manufacturers, we provide rapid prototyping using wire and sinker EDM capabilities to manufacture cores and inserts that meet your specific product needs.

By operating an in-house tool shop, Remington Medical professionals take high precision to the next level by customizing your medical devices to your exact specifications.
